Sergott Contemporary Art has the pleasure of presenting Neo-Kitsch: a New Old Latin America, an exhibition presenting seven Latin American artists who utilize kitsch objects and symbols to refer to the colonial, social, cultural, and political history of Latin America past and present.
Kitsch is often considered to be gaudy or ironic, but in Latin America, it represents a long cultural history of each country and acts to remind the viewer of a forgotten past. Examples of kitsch items may include indigenous handcrafts, or tropical fruit and animal sculptures. The artists presented in Neo-Kitsch explore their identity, art history and culture through their use of imagery, often introducing bright colors and objects.
These seven artists have been collected and exhibited by museums across the world, including, but not limited to the Museum of Latin American Art Long Beach, Museum of Arts and Design NY, MOMA Buenos Aires, Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, amongst others.
Neo-Kitsch: A New Old Latin America, curated by Associate Director, Andrew Ütt, will run from July 22 until August 27 at Sergott Contemporary Art in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Charitable contributions will be made from sales at the opening presentation to be held on July 22, 2016 from 6-9pm. To receive directions to the opening event, please RSVP to info@sergottart.com or (858) 756-2377. Artist lectures will be announced during the course of the exhibition.

We all have stories of where we came from and where we want to go. Letters from the Wall is an ongoing series of vignettes based on actual letters and real life stories of those affected by the United States/Mexico international border wall, immigration, deportation and separation. Originally written as a bi-national theatrical event by Dave Rivas, it was first performed on both sides of the border wall in San Ysidro, California and Playas, Tijuana, Mexico, with actors performing simultaneously on the United States and Mexico side in English and Spanish. Each “letter” is woven together from the true stories, letters, emails, and even bedtime stories that Rivas has collected. And more content is being added all the time as –with each performance—audience members share their own stories or experiences. It is an ever growing and changing series that seeks to address the human experience in pursuit of a better life. Note: This show will also play at the Fringe Festival June 23 – July 3.
Dave Rivas is a native San Diegan, actor, voice over artist, director and playwright. He is a founding member of Amigos del REP, a Latino based theatrical group housed at San Diego REPertory Theatre in San Diego, California.
